Sweet Potato Fries

Sweet Potato Fries (Dulce Delicious Recipe)

I must be totally crazy for using my oven on this extremely hot 30 degree celsius Sunday.  The kids are watching the Euro Cup on the big screen TV, while barbecuing outdoors and here I am baking Dulce Delicious' Sweet Potato Fries for them, less the eggs due to my daughter's egg allergy, of course.

The air conditioner is blasting away to keep the house cool and the oven's heating things up while transmitting an awesome cinnamon scent throughout the house.  This is one amazing recipe that I highly recommend everyone tries at least once.  It will definitely be repeated in my home.  That's for sure!

Back to this wasted energy thing ... I'm starting to feel guilty for using the oven during this heatwave and will probably try this recipe on the barbecue next time around.  I just wonder how this will show up on Switch Hop.

Oh, what's Switch Hop?  Well it's a free program I signed up for that permits me to watch my daily electrical use.  A wonderful guide that helps me make wiser decisions when using electricity within my home.  This program has a friend system that allows us to compare daily electrical usage amongst one another.  It's really cool!  You should check it out.

Since signing up, I've learned that keeping my office computer turned on while in sleep mode uses more continuous energy than I would've ever imagined.  I've now started turning off my computer when not in use and my energy usage has gone down, resulting in cheaper electric bills.  That's just one example.  I'm still continuously discovering more and more ways of saving energy as the weeks pass.

Energy issues, global warming and the 3Rs are very near and dear to my heart. Especially since the August 2003 Toronto and New York blackout.  If it happened once, it can happen again.  Although I wasn't living in Ontario at that time, my family is from Toronto and got to experience it first hand.  Scary!

  1. It looks like your fries turned out great! I'm so happy the recipe was a hit with your family. I too turned on my oven today for a lasagna and it was just as hot here. It wasn't the best idea but, the lasagna sure was good!

That website sounds like a great resource. I've never heard of it before but, I will definitely look into it. I would have never thought that a computer in sleep mode uses that much energy. Good to know!

    1. I'm hoping to make them with the eggs the next time my daughter is out of town. I'd love to try your exact recipe.
I'm not sure that Switch Hop is available in the US, but I'm sure there's a contact number where you can inquire.

  2. Yum! I was planning some of this soon as well! I agree, I hate having the oven and the A/C on! Thanks for the website tip.

I bet these would be delish on the grill.

    1. Seams like this heatwave is covering most of North America.

Let us know how you make out with the fries, especially if you make them on the grill. It will be interesting to compare.

  3. Living in Florida, we use air conditioning most of the time...but I keep the temp pretty high. I had no idea the computer used up so much electricity...I turn mine off at night, fortunately, but I use it often enough during the day to keep it on all day.
One of our biggest electricity users is an ice machine. When I turn that off, the bills go down!

    1. Wow! That's interesting about the ice maker. I may just turn mine off too and watch for the results on Switch Hop.

This is probably what's creating sudden electrical peaks in my Florida condo when we're not there. The AC is always left at a high temp and so is the fridge that has in ice maker. These are the only things I leave on while back in Canada.

  4. I do love sweet potato fries. They are so addictive. I also grew up in Ontario and am old enough to remember the energy crisis and the fail of the grid.

    1. My girls were staying with family in Toronto and thought it was cool, but I remember everyone starting to worry once their frozen food was starting to thaw. (Good thing for barbecues).

    1. Your sweet potato fries really look wonderful. I also turn my computer off when it is not in use. It does help with energy costs. Sometimes the sum of small changes can make for great savings. Have a great day. Blessings...Mary

    2. The cinnamon and garlic powder seasoning make for a very special taste. So yummy!

It's true what you say there Mary about the small changes. I'm kind of having a bit of fun with Switch Hop and discovering new savings every week based on what I'm turning off. I'm really glad a friend of mine told me about it. Thank goodness for word of mouth and blogs!
