Zucchini

Have you ever seen such a beautiful and vibrant flower?  I never realized how big a zucchini flower could get.

The sight of this flower made me so happy this morning.  I just had to grab my camera and share!

Happy Canada Day!  Hope you're all enjoying this long weekend!

Garden Progress June 22, 2012

Yesterday was a very sad day for me.  My mother passed on 16 years prior on June 22, 1996.  While I'm not trying to bring anyone down, I just wanted to share with you one of her biggest passions.

I was fairly young when I lost my mom, but during the short time she was in my life, she taught me so many things and two of those things were cooking and gardening.  She has left a HUGE imprint in my life today.

Here's some photos showing the garden's progress...

Peonies in the Garden

I just got back indoors after spending a beautiful day working in the garden.  The weather took a drastic turn from extremely hot in the high 30s to low teens (celsius) last Thursday night and it's been raining ever since.  We finally started seeing the sun this morning and it turned out to be a lovely day after all. ~ A great day for gardening.

With weather on our side, I was able to turn the soil around the vegetable plants and add supports to our tomatoes.

The peonies are starting to bloom and this makes me happy since they're one of my favourite flowers.  It's a pity they don't last all summer long.  Even my dog Mia would agree!

Gardening Progress: Week 5

Here we are, 5 weeks since planting seeds and our plants are standing taller everyday.  The stems are getting thicker week by week.

This week was a bit of a breakthrough.  We had some warmer than usual weather on one of the days and were able to take the plants outdoors for a couple of hours to get some fresh air.  I can't wait to start doing this more often.

Gardening Progress: Week 4

The garden is progressing very well.  The biggest change I saw this week was in the thickness of the stems.  I also noticed the leaves are getting bigger.

After transplanting last week, several plants didn't survive, however, new stems grew out of the same pots.  I'm anxious to see what happens this week.

Gardening Progress: Week 3 - Transplanting

After 3 weeks, the seeds have sprouted and leaves have formed.  Now it's time to separate and transplant.

Tomatoes
Peppers

Fingers crossed!  I'm hoping these plants will survive the transplanting stage.  Unfortunately, I'm already starting to see some plants that won't survive this process.  Good thing we planted so many seeds!

Gardening Progress After 2 Weeks

After 2 weeks, the seeds we planted have sprouted.

We've removed the lids from our little greenhouses, transferred them to a sunny location and are now waiting for the leaves to grow.

Planted Seeds for Our 2012 Vegetable Garden

We planted seeds for our vegetable garden.  Doing it right from scratch this year.  We found a fascinating kit at our local hardware store and pulled out a bunch of different seeds from previous year's harvest, including some tomato seeds from my father's garden.  Now it's the anxiety of waiting to see what sprouts from these little peat-pots.

1.  Here are some of our tomato seeds from previous years.

2.  Pour water overtop.

3.  Allow some time for each peat-pot to rise as it moistens.

4.  Pierce open at top and plant 2 to 3 seeds in the middle and then close back up.

5.  Put covers back on the tray and wait for stems to pierce through within the next few weeks.

6.  We planted seeds for tomatoes, hot peppers, sweet peppers, leek and celery.  Let's wait a few weeks and see what happens!
